HAHAHA! As you probably know, I have two young children and I work outside of the home. This means that each morning I have to GET outside of the home, with two young children. Over the years we have established a morning routine. “Peaceful” is not how I would describe it.
5am my alarm goes off. I am not one of those “hit the snooze 6,000 times people,” like my husband is. I am, however, one of those paranoid people who set two separate alarms “just in case” and still wakes up at about 4:58.
The first thing I do every morning is search for my glasses. You know, so I can see. Then, I realize that I had iLasik surgery in August and, low and behold, I CAN see. This makes me happy.
So, I get out of bed and head about 4 steps to the bathroom. As I take step #3, give or take, I trip over our cat. Every. Single. Day. Happiness from realizing I can see has now turned into anger over the fact that one day I will break my neck a mere 12 seconds after waking up. Lovely.
I take a quick shower. Sometimes I ever remember a towel. On those days, I’m back to my happy place. See how the roller coaster begins?
Think to myself: Tonight I will clean this bathroom and stock clean towels.
After my shower I usually climb back into bed and grab my iphone. I look at my calendar and email, and try to get my brain set for the day.
Time to get dressed. I head into my beautiful closet. Before I get there, however, I trip over the cat. Again. Boogers! (Because I really do try not to curse). I narrowly make it into the closet, and look around.
Think to myself: Tonight I will clean up and reorganize this closet. It will only take a minute!
I find the perfect brown pants. Look for the brown and blue peasant shirt that goes perfectly with it. There it is! In the hamper.
Think to myself: Tonight? Tonight I’m doing the laundry! How long can that take?
Find a “second best” shirt. It is clean, but totally wrinkled.
Think to myself: While the laundry is in the machine tonight, I’ll iron and put away the rest of these clothes. Easy, peasy.
Find a third “not great but it’ll work” shirt, and head to the kitchen. Coffee is a must, followed by making my breakfast peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Uh oh… we are out of peanut butter.
Substitute with cream cheese. Not nearly as good. Sigh.
Time to make lunch… again, cupboards are bare. But we have popcorn. So, I bag it up and shove it in my purse.
It’s around this time that I notice that the hem has fallen out of my perfect brown pants. I contemplate sewing it up. I quickly remember that I DON’T SEW. Sigh… time to go with the “second best” brown pants. Back to the bedroom.
Ack that darn cat!
New pants, found and clean (yea!). Outfit as a whole? A wreck. Shoes are cute, but they look best with the original outfit. If you’re keeping up, you’ll notice that the original outfit and this final outfit have nothing in common except for these shoes.
Can’t dwell on it, it is now 5:45 and time to wake up the kids. Lilly is first, so in I go. Before she wakes, I look at her and I thank my lucky stars that she is in my life. I turn on the light.
HOW did the cat get in HERE, just waiting to attack my feet?!? Deep breath…
“Mommy? Is it time to wake up?” She has the sweetest voice.
“Yes honey, it’s a school day,” I say, as I stroke her hair gently.
“Mommy! Don’t touch me! If it is morning time we do not touch people!” she scolds me. She does love making up rules.
By 6:10 Lilly is up, ready, and actually quite happy. Time to get up my little man. He always wakes up with a big smile on his face, and covered in pee.
Think to myself: Tonight I need to put two diapers on this kid before he goes to bed.
6:20 we are all ready. My purse, computer bag, running bag are all over my shoulder. Coffee in hand. I bend down to give Zac a hug. Just because. Lilly peers in my purse…
“I want popcorn! You have popcorn? Mommy I want popcorn! If it is a school day and we are wearing a pink shirt, then we can have popcorn.” Ahh yet another rule.
Think to myself: Tomorrow I will put my bags in the car before waking up the kids. Because that is smart.
Into the garage. Quick discussion of who sits in which carseat, and we’re off!
I drop off the kids, with kisses and hugs, and head off to work. Not a drop of coffee spilled, and not a tear was shed this morning. It was a great morning.
All of those things I promised to do tonight? They probably won’t happen. Certainly not ALL of them.
What is your morning routine like?

I love Lilly’s first rule. We do not touch people in the morning.
I love that as a family, we are not morning people. Not just one or two of us, but all of us. And that makes the no touching rule a reality. We give a good morning hug, then quietly go on with our business. Until I have to yell at Michael for not getting ready fast enough. Or at Jack for making bows and arrows out of pipe cleaners when I told him to brush his teeth.
I barely leave the house on time, though we have more than 2 hours to get ready.
*sigh*
This post cracked me up. I work in the home but our mornings are still crazy trying to get Lily to preschool and Steve off to work. When I do have to get out of the house for something early it’s utter chaos!!! Can totally relate to this. And I ALWAYS spill coffee on myself.
Wow! Your life is my life! All except the cat
Luckily for me though, I only have to get one kid ready, Ben takes Aiden to school on his way to work.
Glad to hear that my list of things to do tonight is just as long as others! Thanks for sharing!
Aww honey your morning blows chunks but the way you tell it is so easy to relate to.
I love Lily’s rules.
Cynthia introduced me to your blog, I LOVE IT!
Your morning routine made me laugh plenty, and I hear your thoughts in my own head nearly every morning.
hahahahahahahahahaha
And now that I have time to think on it more….
hahahahahahahahaha!
How do you do it everyday girl? Honestly? Way to go…and if you came to my house our thoughts as we start the day are about the same.
PS safety pinned my brown pants when the hem went out on them for my first day of work
I stay at home full time and those things STILL don’t get done! It’s such a losing battle, isn’t it? But I love the promises we make to ourselves!
Our whole family wakes up between 7:30-8:00am. That probably seems super late to you, but – on the flip side – we stay up super late too.
I also have many, many things that I promise myself I’ll do…”tomorrow.”
